Mistakes aren't supposed to feel this good...

I learned early on that pretty much everything in life is a scam, and love's at the top of the list. Easy to fake, maximum payout, and people just never stop falling for it. Watching my mom break hearts and empty bank accounts as we bounced from house to house taught me just how dangerous feelings could be. That's a whole lot of hassle I don't need.

These days, I stick to three basic rules. I don’t take something just because I want it. I don’t ask for help, even if I need it. And I never look twice at a guy who has a bigger bank account than I do. I know where those things can get you, and it's not anywhere I need to go. I’m perfectly happy being a dive bar rock star who can barely pay his rent, chasing the dream until my time or my sanity runs out. At least, I thought I was.

Until Brett showed up.

Another thing I don’t do is think about the past. All the people I can never look in the eye again. Who know just how ugly I really am deep down. The last person I need to get mixed up with is someone on that list. The last person I need to go breaking all my rules for is the cocky, spoiled brat who used to sleep in the room across the hall.

No matter how gorgeous he is now.
No matter how filthy he is in bed.
No matter how good it feels when he says all he wants in the world is me.

Working Out the Kinks is a 98,000 word filthy forbidden romance novel about a grumpy, broken rock star who refuses to fall in love and a lonely, relentless, spoiled brat looking for someone to belong to. So much angst, so much arguing, so much spanking, and a touch of taboo. Avoid at all costs if you don’t like those things.

3.5 stars. Well written, but the characters were so unlikable that it made it difficult for me to care if they worked out. . . but somehow Horne convinced me I should. The writing was fluid, the story line solid. I just wish I'd liked the characters better. This is my second Horne book and I felt the same way about the other that I read, so I think this author probably just isn't for me. But if you enjoy a well written and plotted tale with some hot sex, Horne may be for you!

Working Out the Kinks edition by Misha Horne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

1) The author makes me care about her boys. I mean, like, get TOTALLY invested. She writes them like real people, they’ve got depth and complexity and believable reasons for doing the things they do… but she does it effortlessly, weaving it in without info dumping, making it easy to get lost in the story and fall for every single thing her characters do.

2) I’m not into rock stars. Like, I have an active aversion to them. “Rock star romance?” No thank you… I click off those pages as fast as I can. BUT… this is a one-click author for me. I adore her storytelling style, her characters, and the way she makes me care AND makes it hot, so when I get a new release notice from her, I don’t bother to read the blurb, I just buy. (Usually after a high-pitched squeeeeee of excitement, LOL!) And with this one, I figured I’d at least peek at the first chapter and see if I was going to be able to stand reading about a rock star… answer OH, **** YEAH! First, because the “rock star” thing is just… man, it’s just a perfect part of this particular story. Not overpowering, but pulled through so well so that it’s totally believable in relation to his character. Second, music, and being a rock star (so to speak) is effortlessly and believably incorporated in Lan’s “voice.” Again, kinda going back to #1. I still won’t be looking for rock star romances, but it just reaffirms the one-click, I’ll-read-everything-she-writes status of this author for me.

3) It’s f’ing hot. Spanking and discipline aren’t even my kink, but dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmnnnnnn… D

4) Single POV. What??? When does that ever happen? Not very often on my reading list. I’ve gotten so used to reading alternating POV in m/m that I thought it might be off-putting. Instead, it was refreshing. I loved seeing it all through Lan’s eyes only. Partly because it allowed us to go deep with him, and partly because it just gave the story a perfect flavor, as Brett was (re-)discovered through his eyes.

5) Brett. Just… Brett. Hahahaha! I adored him. Why? Because of everything. His cockiness and his stubbornness and his vulnerability and his strength, and the way all of those things came together to make him a real person —> Lan’s perfect match.

6) THAT kind of love. You know, the one-and-done, you’re-it-for-me, you-and-only-you… like, sorry. But I’m sold. You had me at, “I screamed your name with the first guy who f’d me.” *Snicker*

7) Coming to peace with the past. I won’t put a spoiler thing, but for real, sometimes cutting off what’s toxic is the healthiest thing to do. I liked that bit of the story.

8) The whole selfless-for-your-friends thing. Again, no spoilers, but <3 <3 <3 Rough-with-a-heart-of-gold is going to get me every time.

9) First person. The perfect POV to really get in Lan’s head. So much fun! Even when I wanted to shake him, even when his repetitive angst for the first half of the book was bordering on too much, I could deal with it, because a) I *was* in his head, and b) the author made me see that, yes, he really would be that hung up on his issues, because c) she wove in his backstory and fleshed it out and showed me WHY he felt that way in a way that made it 100% believable.

10) Happy endings. Every single hot-and-steamy one throughout the book *grin* … and most of all, the super sweet one at the very end that left me smiling. Because really, what’s better than a book that gives you ALL the feelz? The naughty ones and the ones that make you sigh and believe that love like that really exists? (Answer nothing… nothing at all is better, and I’ll definitely re-read this one again!)

11) Bonus, except it’s not really a “thing I loved” about this book. It’s more like a reality check / warning / reminder-to-self for scheduling future reading time Remember that bit up in #2 about “just peeking at the first chapter?” Sigh. I should know better. After all, I lost a previous day to binge-reading her entire catalog after I discovered her. But this? Half a day later, after I’d blown off all my scheduled work for the day, both my kids, and a few other responsibilities, I realized my “quick peek” had leveled up to a binge-read, cover to cover. So good. Sooooooo good. Sucked for my personal productivity, but totally worth it. D
Loved this book! Very hot sexytimes and it had more plot than Horne's other books (which I've really liked). It's very "thinky." Lan is in his head a lot. But that allows you to understand where he's coming from and see his growth process. Lan's introspection is really mature and makes sense. I enjoyed that. There's some really quality writing in this book. Some very nice phrases and descriptions. I wish I'd bookmarked them so I could add them here. Just read it. You'll find your own favorites.

I had a couple issues with Brett. I felt like he was written as closer to 19 or 20 years old than 25. He felt immature, and yes, bratty, quite often. I'm also not quite sure why he suddenly decided to look Lan up after 10 years and why he felt he loved him so much, so quickly. Lust, yes. Love, nope. He really didn't know who Lan had become and Brett is superfast with the L word. Why did he wait 10 years? I liked the secondary characters. The dialog felt real, especially between Lan and his friend Rondo. I'd like an epilogue to see what Brett decided to do about his job and if Lan turned his new enthusiasm into better gigs/music.
3.5 stars

I just could not get into this book…. way too much angst for me. Landon needed to grow a set. With all his hang-ups I just could not buy into the dominant partner thing. I LOVE Misha Horne's book generally but this one just did not do it for me.
Wow..My second read by this author and it was great! Although I'm not a huge fan of a lot of introspection, it was perfectly done. I felt like I was literally living in Landon's brain and participated in his journey every step of the way, something I absolutely love. The writing was great. This was sweet, in it's own way, and so damn hot!! There is some kink, and damn, it was good, but it's not a true BDSM book..just an fyi for those of you who don't really like BDSM. By the end of the book, which I couldn't put down until I finished during the wee hours of the morning, I was rooting for these boys hard and the I was NOT disappointed...the feels were strong. Lan and Brett were perfect for each other. I loved it!!
Step brothers who haven't seen each other in 10 years. Brett and Lan (don't call me Landon), meet again in a crappy bar, where Lan had just filled in for the bands vocalist (even tho he can't sing). Lan's list of don't do's is long and rich pretty boys are near the top. When he realizes who Brett is he walks away, then walks right back and takes him home. Brett is a brat and has always brought out the worst in Lan. What follows isn't so much a love story as it is an exercise in Brett getting exactly what he wants and Lan getting exactly what he needs. I enjoyed their journey together. I liked the author and will look for more. Only complaint is that it felt like ended rather abruptly.
