Esperanza wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, "I wait only for you to make me a woman."

In 1698 la Florida, Esperanza, a wildly independent Timucuan herbolaria, has a decision to make - surrender her whole being to Juan Francisco, a known rebel recently returned to the province, or fulfill her chosen mission as a healer. Intrigue surrounds the man she loves and she does not know if he can be trusted. And, though her people need her skills, reports that invaders from Carolana are present in the area compel her to leave the protection of the mission. Her dear friend, Maria Helena, in the company of a visiting friar, travels eastward and must be warned about the danger. Esperanza's journey across the interior of la Florida to the Rio San Juan and north to freedom gives her hope that her people's survival will be assured thanks to the actions of a few indomitable individuals she meets along the trail.

Daughter of the Sun The Herbolaria Story eBook Joanne Lamond

The end of the seventeenth century brought many changes to the natives of the Americas. The young woman in Joanne Lamond's novel, Daughter of the Sun: The Herbolaria's Story, is caught in the tangle of those changes in what is now north Florida. She is respected because of her skill with medicinal plants, having learned from her grandfather. But Esperanza must deal with forigners from abroad who have overrun her homeland, pirates from the sea, the ravages of the hurricane, and dangers in the wild. Esperanza handles her problems with courage and resourcefulness and an occasional stamping of the foot.

Another young woman prominent in the story, the African slave, Anika, is befriended by a village dog. It's interesting to learn how dogs were, in general, thought of in that far-off time--just animals--so different from the pampered pets of today. But this particular dog brings something special to the story of the escaping Indians.

Ms. Lamond's research and attention to the details of the period are impressive. The fully developed characters and fast-paced action make this a book you won't put down.
A fast-paced story with vivid descriptions of life for native American's in late 17th century Florida. With Ms. Lamond's attention to detail the reader easily travels back in time and joins an endearing list of characters on their adventurous quest for love, peace and freedom.
I enjoyed reading this book becuase it held my interest. The story line flowed smoothly. It was easy to keep up with the characters & the story itself was interesting with the historical background involving romance & how the
characters effected one another throughtout the story.
Both a romance and an adventure, Daughter of the Sun kept me reading late into the night. The author's skill in creating a sense of time and place made me feel as if I had stepped back into the Florida of long ago. The plot is fast paced and full of suspense. While the book is set in a time long ago, the characters are real and easy to relate to for present day readers, and the romance is both believable and satisfying. If you love history, romance, adventure, or just a great story, this book is for you!
While reading "Daughter of the Sun" I felt like I was taking an interesting journey across la Florida with the Herbolaria, her people and their invaders. I can tell that much research was done by the author to create such a vivid story of the Indians and
Spaniards in the late 1600's. This was a quick read with beautiful elaborate scenic descriptions of both the land and her characters
accompanied with heartfelt friendships, love, hate, adventure and, of course, healing.
I loved "Daughter of the Sun the Herbolaria's Story." It was such an intriguing read that I could not wait to see what happened next.

I thought the main character, the strong and independent Esperanza, was such a fascinating young woman. I could not wait to see how her tale would unfold throughout the entire story.

It is apparent the author did extensive research and really captured what life must have been like in 17th century Florida!
This novel is characterized by intensive research into the period, place and peoples of early colonial north Florida. Within the coming of age story of a young woman, the author details the region's early history, knitting together information about the plants a herbolaria would have used with the complex interactions of the native populations and the aims of various European groups interested in the area, illustrating how political, religious and societal influences from the continent shaped events in the new world.
The characters are as varied as the groups that peopled the Atlantic coast of north Florida. The heroine generates interest and sympathy through her strength as she grows into her role as a leader. The many plot twists keep the reader's interest. This book is both entertaining reading and educational... a good read.
